It’s a living case study in why trust, when compiled into opaque centralized systems, inevitably breaks.

Code is only as strong as the trust it protects. And UWM’s trust was built on a fragile tower of interest-rate swaps and hidden leverage—a structure that collapsed when the Fed pivoted faster than any hedge model predicted.

No one needed a $2 billion lifeline because the system’s stress points were known in advance.

Now, I’m not naive—DeFi has its own issues. Oracle failures, governance attacks, and liquidity crunches have caused billions in losses. But the key difference is visibility. In 2022, the Celsius Network—a centralized crypto lender—suffered a similar fate to UWM: it took on too much risk, hid the losses, and needed a bailout (which never came). The difference?
